Description
Corrosion inhibitors used in concrete are admixtures that, in concrete containing chlorides in excess of the acceptable corrosion threshold value for the metal in untreated concrete, either increase the time to corrosion initiation or greatly reduce the corrosion rate of embedded metal, or both. Reinforced concrete was commonly employed in the previous century, however it deteriorates prematurely due to aggressive factors such as carbonic gas and chloride ions. Concrete corrosion is a physical barrier that protects steel from corrosion, and its alkalinity causes a passive layer to grow around the reinforcement, increasing protection from corrosion processes.
